LOOKING YOUR BEST FOR PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
So you’ve decided to have your portrait taken. Fabulous. It can become a family heirloom, and it’s something individual that captures your special spirit.Formal or candid, group or individual – putting in a little preparation will make the world of difference to the end result.
Here are some tips from Perth portrait photography specialists, Freedom Photography that’ll really make you smile.
One of the most important aspects is what to wear (isn’t that always the case!). Portrait photograph sittings can be lengthy, and you should dress to be comfortable and relaxed.Clothing should be secondary to the portrait and shouldn’t detract from the main event. It is important that you wear something that reflects the real you.
Obvious patterns, plaids, tartans, florals, checks, logos and wide stripes are OUT.Your outfit should be low key and classic. It’s also important to feel comfortable and relaxed, so wear something appropriate.Clothing that’s too tight can change your body shape, which will look odd.
Turtlenecked jumpers or V-necked jumpers are the easiest shape to wear and to photograph as they complement the shape of the face best.Exposed skin can distract attention, so it’s best to wear a long-sleeved shirt.Shirts with collars provide a good frame for the face.
The darker colours are preferable to light ones which can make people look washed out.The brights – red, orange, yellow – can be overpowering.Choose natural fabrics such as cotton and linen over shiny ones such as satin, which can reflect light back.
When a group of people is involved in the portrait photography, it’s a good idea to get everyone to wear similar shades of clothing. That’s not to say that outfits have to be identical, but you should be looking to create a feeling of cohesiveness and unity so that the faces – not the clothes – attract attention.
Why not bring a change of clothes with you – you may change your mind? It’s also a good idea to bring accessories such as hats, a favourite leather jacket, sunglasses etc. for a change of scenery. And bring along a bag of essential items, like lip balm, lipstick, foundation, and blemish cover just in case!
No-one wants a bad hair day, so it’s a good idea to bring all your hair accessories along (combs, clips etc) as well as a styling mousse or light hairspray. And because it may not always turn out the way you wanted it to, avoid haircuts or radical changes to your hairstyle just before your portrait photography shoot. Rather schedule a session when you’re feeling good about yourself.
And finally, always consult the photography studio before the shoot to get their advice. They’ll have tips and suggestions about what to do, but it’s up to the individual. Just as there are some ‘rules’ – the rules are there to be broken. As professional Perth portrait photography studio, Freedom Photography says, it’s all about you.The results are incredible when there’s a relationship of trust between the photographer and the subject and when the boundaries of convention are pushed (check out the bare torsos, close-ups, candid children’s portraits etc on Freedom Photography’s online gallery).
